After the young
artist Jake Wharton was first heard on Vimeo and became a social media hit with
many of his songs going viral in a very short amount of time it became clear to
a lot of people that the young artist (18) was bound to become a hit. The
artist is rumored to be currently involved with numerous record labels the
young artist insists that he “loves music” and “wants to return everything that
music has done for him. We spoke to the artist in an attempt to try and find
out what makes the artist tick as well as where his love for music stems from
and a lot of other vital information for one of the hottest prospects on the
planet.
Jake recently performed at numerous indie small indie festivals headlining some and being high up in the guest list on others however when we asked him which the best festival he had performed in for him was, he replied "it has to be Leeds Fest 2014, at this time I was hardly known and I was on one of the small indie music stages, you know? the ones that only a few hundred people can fit in max. Most people that were there didn't know who I was just out for a good time. But there was a group of about 20 people that knew every single words to all of my songs, it was a great feeling haha. But leeds is near to where I'm from and I had attend the festival as a spectator a number of times before I even got on any stage and it was always a dream to perform there. After that I got to meet some of those fans that new all of the words, you know the ones I spoke about earlier? and I actually went to go watch the 1975, who I love at the moment by the way, stand for the good things in music and my favourite band of all time Arctic Monkeys with them, it was crazy, I was kind of 'fan girling' over the Arctic Monkeys while they seemed to be the same towards me! Me! haha. I mean of course all of the other festivals were great and the fact that I was one of the 'Big Names' was great, but the stage wasn't much bigger and the atmosphere of Leeds is something that I have always wanted to embrace. Maybe sometime soon I'll be on that big stage, eh?"
Of course you've already named some of the bands that you respect and love the music of but what about the real stem of your music taste where does this come from? "Well as a kid I liked all sorts of music, I hadn't really established a music taste yet, I think for a long time when you're a Kid you're influenced really easily, I listened to some of the classics that my parents liked, the king of rock and roll Elvis Presley was one of my parents favourites and this of course influenced me, I used to love him, I still do! But watching the way he used to perform really helped me to realise the importance of the audience, they have to be involved as music fans you know that music isn't something you just listen to? It's something you love, it's a big part of you. Of course I was influenced by my friends too, I just loved listening to music, there wasn't a specific genre, style, instrument that attracted me it was just anything haha, seems a bit Naive now but I used to just listen to anything that came on the radio. But my music taste really became established when i was around 14 I finally became attracted to a specific genre and this is what helped me to form my style of music I think. From then on my favourite kind of bands and music were really established, people like Arctic Monkeys and Oasis were people that I listened to for a long time, then the Kooks, The 1975, The Courteeners, The Killers, Alt-J these are all bands that will always be on my playlist when i'm at home and while they all do have very different types of music they all have the same values and that's key to the world that i'm in and the progression of this genre."
What are these 'Values' that you keep mentioning? "I thought you might ask me something like that haha, you know it's something that you just have. It's not to be one of 'those' artists, you know the ones that you hear everyday on the radio and the ones that are just continuing to be manufactured every year from those kinds of shows like the X-factor, I have no doubt in my mind that yes a lot of them are very talented as artists but you have to stay true to yourself and the music that you love. It is important not to be a sell out and try and sell to anyone and everyone but instead be key to the music. When I say sell out I'm not specifically talking about money etc? Everyone loves money? it's important to everything you can do more and buy more and look how you want to look. I'm not calling you a sell out because you earn more money but because you DO it for the money not for passion. You get me?"
Where do you want this life to take you? Where do you think it will take you? "haha what a stupid question, I dont have a clue? I don't know if I want to know actually? Im just living so happily right now, everything is perfect and going exactly how things happen in my dreams, I don't want it to end but who knows? Im just going to carry on exactly how I've been going and hope that this isn't just luck but instead that people appreciate my music. I dream about headlining places like Glastonbury and Leeds and reading but who knows? I'm going to continue the way I am and hope that I'm talented enough that I will carry myself to fulfil my dreams.
What artist would you like to work with? "I know this sounds weird, because he may not fit in exactly with my music, but I was thinking about this the other day and I think that My music would work well with George Ezra, I really respect him as an artist, like I think he's really talented and respect him massively. I met him some time last year, at a gig actually, and we hit it off really well. We spoke about maybe doing something together some time but we never got round to it I guess."
