Research into a Potential Target Audience - Secondary Research

NME reader profile

From this we can learn that the average NME reader cares a lot about appearance with a lot of money being spent on clothing per year, suggesting that a lot of stylish people or people that are into modern trends read the magazine. As well as this the reader is (clearly) very into music both through the fact that they spend a lot of money on music related items as well as the fact that they are reading the magazine itself. The typical magazine reader is also likely to be male as this is the gender most linked with and buys the magazine the most, with the reader likely being someone who spends a lot of time with tech and online. The reader is likely to be older than 16 but under the age of 40 we can guess this through the fact that the reader is either likely to be still studying or in full time work however the content of the magazine is unlikely to be above the age of 30 due to the modern, current types of content involved in the magazine.
From this we can see that the average reader of Kerrang is male, 15-24 year old and therefore have a similar profile to that of the NME magazine due to the fact that they have very similar content and band information and therefore will be attracting very similar audiences. The class of both magazines is also middle class shown through ABC1 and this is the same through both magazine again due to the fact that they are a similar magazine, though the male to female ratio is closer for Kerrang than for NME.

How will this research affect my ideas?

This therefore would suggest the that the use of images etc should be directed towards the male audience as opposed to female. This means either attracting the male gaze through the use of females that have sex appeal or are shown in a way that will entice the male audience however must still maintain enough that will attract females. Therefore this would suggest (if using women on the front cover) a women that many girls look up to however still looking attractive in an attempt to maintain the attraction of the main target audience. However when using males in the image the men should reflect either current music as this will be recognisable to the audience age group or someone that reflects the idea of the reader or the indie genre. Colours used should be simple pallet to attract both of the audiences as this leaves pretty neutral as well as using the general indie genre colours. The content of the magazine should be that of current news or artists often those that are a hit on social media such as artists that are the most streamed on things such as spotify e.g. Jake Bugg.

My Target Audience.

Due to the fact that my magazine will be of the same genre to these two magazine I will therefore be aiming for a similar group of people. This would therefore suggest that my main target audience will be Male, 15-25 that it an internet and social media frequent user. Interested in modern music and middle class. Though must make sure not to work against having female audience due to the fact that the male audience is only slightly more dominant than the female audience for the indie genre. The reason I am targeting these people is due to the fact that these are the most common age for those that are interested in both the genre of music as well as the types of bands and content that will be frequent in the magazine and therefore must make sure that the target audience is clear and will therefore be able to maximize and utilize the audience.
